The Harvard Varsity Club (HVC), with support from the Department of Harvard Athletics and Friends of Harvard Football, established the Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Endowment Fund in September 2017 to provide support to the Abercrombie family and any future Harvard undergraduate student-athlete who incurs a severe or catastrophic injury while competing for the Crimson while enrolled in Harvard College.

The fund is named in honor of Ben Abercrombie, who suffered a serious cervical injury while making his Harvard football debut at the University of Rhode Island on September 16, 2017.

In March 2024, the Harvard Varsity Club upgraded the Abercrombie Fund from a current-use fund to an endowment fund, investing donations alongside the Club’s general endowment. The Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Endowment Fund will now provide a source of support to Ben and any others in need in perpetuity.

“On behalf of the Harvard Varsity Club Board, we have made it possible for the Harvard Community and others to support Ben, his family, and any future undergraduate student-athlete facing a challenge of this nature,” commented Bob Glatz ’88, The Broadbent Family Executive Director of the Harvard Varsity Club.

A heralded recruit out of Hoover, Alabama, Ben had risen on the depth chart in the defensive backfield throughout preseason training camp. He was a two-sport star in football and baseball at Hoover High School, helping the Buccaneers win Alabama 7A State Championships in both sports (football in 2014 & 2016, baseball in 2017). Following his senior year on the gridiron he was selected to the All-State first team.
