The Harvard Varsity Club established its Hall of Fame in 1967 by enshrining an original class of 55 of the greatest athletes in Harvard Athletics history over dinner at the Harvard Club of Boston.
Continuing this great tradition, we are pleased to announce that the following individuals will be inducted into the Harvard Varsity Club Hall of Fame during a dinner and induction ceremony at the Harvard Club of Boston on Saturday, October 14, 2023:

John Cole ’05, Swimming & Diving
9-time All-American in the 500 free (2002, 2001), 1,650 free (2005, 2003, 2002, 2001), 800 free relay (2005), and 400 medley relay (2002, 2001) … 15-time Ivy League Champion in the 500 free (2005, 2003, 2002, 2001), 1,000 free (2005, 2003, 2002, 2001), 1,650 free (2005, 2003, 2002, 2001), and 800 free relay (2005, 2002, 2001) … Remains the only student-athlete in Ivy League history to win 4 conference championships in the 500 free and 1,000 free, and is 1 of 2 student-athletes to accomplish the feat in the 1,650 free … 16-time All-Ivy League honoree … Held Ivy League Championships meet records in the 500 free, 1,000 free, and 1,650 free at the time of his graduation … Harvard record holder in the 1,650 free (14:39.71), ranks 2nd in the 1,000 free (8:54.92) and 3rd in the 500 free (4:16.91) … Led Harvard to 3 Ivy League championships (2005, 2003, 2001) … 4-year letterwinner … Team captain (2005).

David Cromwell ’06, Swimming & Diving
7-time All-American in the 200 backstroke (2004, 2005, 2006), 100 backstroke (2005, 2006), 400 medley relay (2005) and 800 freestyle relay (2005) … Ivy League Champion in 100 backstroke (2004-06), 200 backstroke (2004-06), 100 butterfly (2004, 2006), 200 freestyle (2006), 400 medley (2004, 2005) … 4-year letterwinner (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006) … Team captain (2005) … at the time set both the Harvard 100 and 200 backstroke records in 2006 … Received the William J. Paul Gompers ’86-’87, Track & Field/Cross Country
All-American in cross country (1986) … Set Harvard records in the 5,000 meters indoors and the 5,000 and the 10,000 meters outdoors … Ivy League Champion in the 5,000 (1987) … 4-year letterwinner in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track … 3-time first team All-Ivy in cross country … Set records during his time at Harvard in the 10,000 meter Cross Country Nationals and Heps Cross Country course record … Placed 5th at the 1986 NCAA Championships, the top finish ever by a Harvard athlete until that point in time …Second Team Academic All American (1987) …Set the World Junior Record and still the American Junior Record Holder in the marathon … Member of the 1983 and 1988 US Cross Country National Team … Bronze medalist in the marathon at the 1985 World University Games … US National 20km Champion (1989) … Competed at the US Olympic Trials three times (1984, 1988, and 1992) … 1988 Olympian for Team USA

Matthew Stehle ’06, Basketball

Induction Requirements
The Executive Committee of the Harvard Varsity Club appoints a
committee that oversees the Hall of Fame selection process. As Harvard offers
the largest Division I intercollegiate athletic program in the country, it is a
challenging task to evaluate athletic achievement across 42 varsity sports.
In order to be selected into the Hall of Fame, athletes must
meet the following requirements:
- Been
a graduate of the college for 15 years
- Excelled
for multiple years in a sport while an undergraduate at Harvard
- Achieved
greatness in a sport at the time when competing at Harvard
In total, more than 600 athletes from Harvard have been inducted
into the Hall of Fame. If you would like to nominate someone for induction to
