Complementing a powerful physique with great competitive drive, he starred for three years in track and cross country, equally competent on the turf, the boards and the cinders. Strong enough to double, he was an outstanding dual meet performer at both the half-mile and mile. He broke the college record in the 880 with a 1:52.3 clocking, came back a week later to cut the mile mark to 4:16.5, a record that endured for 19 years. Captained the team as a senior.
