Endowed with both brain and brawn, he developed into one of Harvard’s most inspirational captains. His specialty was the discus, the classic event requiring perfect coordination and timing as well as strength. In that event he won the Heptagonal title for two straight years, added the IC4A gold, and consistently contributed multiple points to major team victories. Scholastically he was equally outstanding as Phi Beta Kappa, Burr Scholarship winner, and Rhodes scholar. In the latter role he joined the Oxford-Cambridge forces against Harvard-Yale in 1957 and broke the discus record for the international meet.
