Thank you to the Harvard Varsity Club for this incredible honor. I think all of us Harvard athletes reflect with fondness and appreciation for the privilege to have simply competed for Harvard in our various sports, let alone be recognized in this way.
I have been fortunate to stay close to Harvard since graduation, making my off-season home in Cambridge, and training at Bright-Landry, Palmer-Dixon, Beren, and, of course, the Stadium. This proximity has allowed me to maintain bonds with athletic department staff, coaches, and athletes despite having just passed 15 years since graduation. In many ways I have never left, and I don’t plan to.
Staying close to Harvard, at least figuratively, is important to me because of the spirit of the University: the energy and enthusiasm of education, the possibility of progress and improvement, and the freedom of opportunity that penetrates every fiber of this place.
I believe this spirit is best embraced and exemplified by the student-athletes, whose drive for excellence on the field and in the classroom, pursued with an attitude of teamwork, sets an example for the entire Harvard community.
The Varsity Club is an important emblem of that spirit, carrying it forward not only during our time in college, but long afterwards. Thank you to the Harvard Varsity Club, Harvard Athletics, and Harvard University for the privilege of being a part of this community and for the honor of being recognized as a member of the Hall of Fame.
