It was 20 years ago that I graduated from Harvard University, which seems so long ago, and yet, like yesterday. My Harvard experience was bittersweet. Trying to balance educational requirements, rigors of varsity basketball, marriage, and raising a family all at once. It was a very difficult and trying task. I contribute my success in these areas to the help of the Harvard faculty, Coach McLaughlin and his wonderful coaching staff, the much needed support of my wife Jean, my faith in God and our local church and friends.
Even though this award may be viewed by some as a great individual award and major accomplishment, I consider it as an award that must be shared with many exceptional people that I had the pleasure of meeting during my Harvard years. They were instrumental in me achieving great success within the basketball program and who affected my life profoundly.
When I decided to attend Harvard I made the commitment that I would be the best player that I could be and to work very hard toward that end. I was able to accomplish my goals because I had an exceptional coach and staff that pushed and supported me. I also had wonderful teammates that believed in me, and the team's ability to excel. Never in my wildest dreams could I have ever imagineed that this would be the end result of a lot of sweat and tears, ups and downs, successes and disappointements of athletics at a major university. It was unbelievable to me the caliber of people I was able to meet and befriend during this wonderful chapter of my life. People like my mentor and friend Ray Lavietes and one of the greatest supporters of Harvard basketball, Tom Stemberg.
I would ike to give a special thanks to my parents, family, and children. I believe that a person can only achieve success by the unconditional love and support from their loved ones. If it were not for my parents and family being there every step of the way, I would not be receiving this award at all.
It is an extraordinary honor and I am deeply humbled by it.
