Showcased as “a jewel in my coaching career” by Hal Ulen, he dominated the longer distances for four years, Overcoming physical handicaps, he stroked his way to a multitude of Harvard records, reaching the high point of a great career by qualifying for the 1948 Olympic team in the 1500-meter freestyle, in which he won his way into the final and finished sixth against the greatest in the world.
