Undaunted by the lack of a coach, a budget, or even the proper boats, he showed sailing promise as a freshman and for four years was one of Harvard’s finest skippers. With classmate William G. Saltonstall, Jr. as a running mate in his junior year, he helped Harvard win the Boston Dinghy Cup, the Geiger Trophy and the Big Three championship. The following year was a season long triumph: first the New England championship on the Thames for, perhaps, the most testing victory, then the National Collegiate Championship a month later on Narragansett Bay.
