For three years a mainstay at No.7, he captained the 1948 boat that set course records in the Compton Cup on Lake Carnegie and the Adams Cup over the Henley course in the Schuykill, captured the EARC title at Cambridge, beat Yale at New London by 1.6 seconds in one of the closest finishes in the history of the four-mile classic, and barely lost to California in the finals of the Olympic trials.
