Immortalized in Harvard football history as “The Magnificent Faker,” he was the key man for three years in Coach Dick Harlow’s mystifying offense. He handled the ball on practically every play, performing feats of legerdemain that baffled opponents. His most memorable afternoon was against Princeton in 1937 when he gained more than 200 yards, virtually eliminated a Princeton tackle from All-America selection, and scored two touchdowns in a 34-6 triumph. A heralded basketball prospect, he was “found” in spring football practice as a freshman and played basketball only as a senior.
